Weniger zum kategorientechnischen als zum inhaltlichen Aspekt:

Die Library of Congress ist jetzt wohl wieder dazu 
zurückgekehrt, die Content notes in der Titelaufnahme selbst in MARC21-Kat. 505
unterzubringen, statt in einer eigenen Datei auf ihrem Server mit 
Verlinkung darauf in der Titelaufnahme (Kat 856). Die amerikanischen Bibliotheken 
mit ihren hierzulande leider kaum wahrgenommenen OPACs verfahren schon 
seit Einführung des "Content enrichment" Anfang der neunziger Jahre in 
dieser Weise (desgleichen auch die australischen und kanadischen Bibliotheken).

Im deutsch-österreichischen Bibliotheksraum scheint, so weit ich sehe,
die Tendenz unglücklicherweise in die Richtung der von der LC jetzt aufgegebenen 
Praxis zu gehen: Speichern der Inhaltsvezeichnisse (überwiegend als PDF-Dateien)
als von der Titelaufnahme getrennte Dateien und Verlinkung in der Titelaufnahme.

Beispiel:  Österreichischer Bibliothekenverbund: Gesamtkatalog 
(http://opac.bibvb.ac.at/acc01), unterster Button "eDOC Suche". Die Suche 
ist aber nur über den Verbundkatalog und nicht im einzelnen OPAC möglich. 

Letzteres ist gewährleistet im Katalog der Vorarlberger Landesbibliothek 
(http://vlb-katalog.vorarlberg.at/F?func=file&file_name=find-
b&local_base=vlb01). Dort wird auch die Suche in Inhaltsverzeichnissen 
angeboten, die Treffer sind mit PDF-Dateien verlinkt. Hier ist es 
umgekehrt wie im ÖBV: Inhaltsverzeichnisse sind nur lokal recherchierbar. 
Folgte man diesem Modell, müsste jede Bibliothek für jedes 
Inhaltsverzeichnis eine eigene PDF-Datei erstellen (lassen), was nicht gerade 
effektiv erscheint.

Mein Fazit: Inhaltsverzeichnisse sollten sowohl in den Verbund- als auch 
in den Einzel-OPACs recherchierbar sein. Nur so vereinigen sich die 
Vorteile der kooperativen Erfassung und der optimalen Funktionalität des 
primären Sucheinstiegs und des Einstiegs über den Verbund-OPAC. 
Als MAB2-Kategorie käme wohl 517c p in Frage.
Die Anzeige der Inhaltsverzeichnisse im OPAC hat überdies den Vorteil, 
dass die Suchbegriffe hervorgehoben angezeigt werden.

To whom it concerns: Ich kann nur die probeweise Suche in 
Inhaltsverzeichnissen und "Publisher's descriptions" in amerikanischen 
Einzel- und Verbund-OPACs empfehlen. Hier drei für viele:

Ich möchte unserem Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekaren das Vorbild der 
amerikanischen OPACs ans Herz legen. Die technische Realisierung nach 
Vorbild der Library of Congress wäre sicher preisgünstiger als das sonst 
in den USA praktizierte Outsourcing (meist über Blackwell Table of 
Contents Enrichment Service (http://www.blackwell.com/level2/TOC.asp)).
