Hi,

Carsten explained "holding", "bibliographic item", "bibliographic unit",
and "physical unit" as he understands these concepts and asked:

 > Is this right so far?

It cannot be right but only adequate or useful. I prefer to use more
simple and general concepts. By now I see not much use of distinguishing
between "bibliographic item", "bibliographic unit" and "physical unit"
this way. Instead I'd subsume them all as "item" and define an item like
Jörg as "a thing the librarian can hand over to a patron for instance
for reference or for circulation".

The best mapping of your concepts to my understanding is: "items",
"bibliographic items", and "bibliographic units" can be used
synonymously. Items can consist of parts, some of which are also items
(for instance a book of a multivolume), some of which are not (for
instance a single page of a book). Some items are physical, so they can
also be called "physical units".
