Liebe Kolleginnen, liebe Kollegen,

gerade wurde von der Library of Congress ein Dokument veröffentlicht, 
das einen etwas konkreteren Eindruck von dem vermittelt, was im Rahmen 
der BIBFRAME-Initiative zur Ablösung der MARC-Welt entstehen soll (unten 
anhängend das offizielle Announcement):

Verblüffenderweise orientiert sich das dort beschriebene Modell (das als 
noch vorläufig und nicht vollständig bezeichnet wird) nicht an FRBR, wie 
man es eigentlich erwartet hätte.

In BIBFRAME werden die folgenden vier Klassen definiert (S. 8):
- "Creative Work" (oder kurz "Work"): "a resource reflecting a 
conceptual essence of the cataloging item"
- "Instance": "a resource reflecting an individual, material embodiment 
of the Work"
- "Authority": "a resource reflecting key authority concepts that have 
defined relationships reflected in the Work and Instance. Examples of 
Authority Resources include People, Places, Topics, Organizations, etc."
- "Annotation": "a resource that decorates other BIBFRAME resources with 
additional information. Examples of such annotations include Library 
Holdings information, cover art and reviews."

Wenn ich das Beispiel auf S. 16ff. richtig verstehe (lustigerweise hat 
man dafür ausgerechnet den FRBR Report verwendet), stellt das 
BIBFRAME-Werk eine Mischung aus dem FRBR-Werk und der FRBR-Expression 
dar, was ich nicht für hilfreich halte. Faktisch wäre, wie man an dem 
Beispiel im Dokument sieht, jede Expression des FRBR Reports (es gibt 
den Ursprungstext von 1997 und die etwas geänderte Version von 2007; 
außerdem natürlich zahlreiche Übersetzungen), ein eigenes BIBFRAME-Werk. 
Man könnte diese wohl allenfalls horizontal verknüpfen, nicht aber an 
einen übergeordneten Knoten für das Werk im FRBR-Sinn anhängen.

Die BIBFRAME-Instanz entspricht, soweit ich sehe, ziemlich genau der 
FRBR-Manifestation. FRBR-Exemplar gibt es auf dieser Ebene hingegen 
nicht. Die Angabe, dass eine Bibliothek eine BIBFRAME-Instanz besitzt, 
wird stattdessen als etwas ähnliches betrachtet wie eine Rezension oder 
ein Buchcover ("holdings" ist ein Beispiel für BIBFRAME-Annotation).

Robert Maxwell schrieb auf der RDA-List: "it does disturb me that "a 
team from Zephira" appears to have, having thought about it for a few 
months, swept away nearly two decades of consideration by the best minds 
in the cataloging profession by apparently abandoning the FRBR model".

The Library of Congress is pleased to report that we have reached two 
important milestones with respect to our Bibliographic Framework 
Initiative:the introduction of a draft data model for web-based 
bibliographic description and a first meeting of a small group of early 
experimenters currently exploring the feasibility of the proposed 
model.The new model is simply called BIBFRAME, short for Bibliographic 
Framework.

The model document is a high-level view of the BIBFRAME model - a 
primer.Although the model is a draft and expected to change, we want to 
share it now with the community not only so that you are informed of 
progress being made but also to engender conversation and constructive 
feedback.The URL for the document/Bibliographic Framework as a Web of

As the document states in its introduction, much remains to be done, but 
it is important to remember that this model, like MARC, must be able to 
accommodate any number of content models and specific implementations of 
the broader information community, but still enable data exchange 
between libraries.

Our second milestone was partnering with six organizations to join us in 
testing and experimenting with this new model.We call these 
organizations the Early Experimenters and they are:British Library, 
Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, George Washington University, National 
Library of Medicine, OCLC, and Princeton University -- and of course LC. 
We met in Washington, DC for two days in October and since then we have 
all be investigating how past and future data might fit into the 
model.After a follow-up meeting in December, they have agreed to share 
the experience and results with the wider community with the expectation 
it will stimulate broader explorations.The Library of Congress will be 
doing the same, on both counts.

To that end we are again planning an update session at ALA in Seattle.It 
will be on *Sunday, January 27, 2013 (10:30-12:00, in the Conference 
Center of the Washington Convention Center, Room 304)*.
