[rak-list] Kritik am RDA-Test in den USA

Liebe Kolleginnen, liebe Kollegen,

derzeit laufen in der angloamerikanischen Welt heftige Diskussionen über 
den Umgang mit den während des amerikanischen Tests produzierten 
RDA-Datensätzen. Die derzeitige Politik von OCLC ist, dass parallel zu 
einem im Rahmen des Tests angelegten RDA-Datensatz keine "Dublette" 
gemäß AACR2 angelegt werden darf:

"OCLC's interim policy during the testing period is that neither test 
participants nor other OCLC members should to convert OCLC master 
records from AACR2 to RDA or vice versa."

Dagegen regt sich nun Widerstand. In einer als "Memorandum against RDA 
test" bezeichneten Online-Petition (die derzeit knapp 300 Personen 
unterzeichnet haben)

wird gefordert, die mit RDA erstellten Datensätze entsprechend zu 
behandeln wie z.B. Katalogisate nach dem deutschen oder französischen 
Regelwerk: "This would allow catalogers to create parallel records for 
040 English records according to existing and widely accepted AACR2 rules."

Kritisiert werden auch Eingriffe in die Normdateien im Rahmen des RDA-Tests:
"Under no circumstances should RDA testers be allowed to create 
conflicting NAF or SAF records in LCNAF or LCSAF. This has already 
created a great deal of confusion and has been universally rejected by 
catalogers involved in the discussion."

Offenbar haben viele Katalogisierer in der angloamerikanischen Welt das 
Gefühl, dass mit dem Test bereits vollendete Tatsachen geschaffen werden 
sollen: "We understand that the implementation of the RDA test is not 
necessarily indicative of any future implementation of new cataloging 
procedures and rules that might replace the current AACR2 rules."

Außerdem wecken die derzeit auftretenden Probleme Befürchtungen für den 
Umstieg: "We believe consideration should be given to the difficulties 
thus far encountered when plans are made for any eventual implementation 
of RDA."

Beim Unterzeichnen kann man auch einen Kommentar hinterlassen. Vielfach 
wird darauf die hingewiesen, dass es sich um eine persönliche Meinung 
handelt, die nicht notwendigerweise mit der des Arbeitgebers 
übereinstimmt ;-)

Ganz interessant sind die z.T. sehr kritischen Äußerungen über RDA 
insgesamt. Hier einige Kostproben:

"RDA is not needed and will create more problems than it solves. Writers 
should go back to the drawing board and start over again."

"RDA is unwieldy at best, untenable at worst, and is being implemented 
at a time when resources (human & financial) are greatly restrained. 
Please, let's not waste any more time or energy on this."

"I wish to remind those large institutions testing and creating this 
that smaller libraries are under the gun from all sides in regard to 
budgets and training. I simply do not know how we can be expected to 
learn and understand RDA/FRBR/FRAD which primarily seems to be concerned 
with renaming concepts and materials that already have perfectly 
functional non-jargony names. I also find it amazing that this project 
has gotten as far as it has with almost zero (if indeed ANY) input from 
people on the front lines of smaller, understaffed and underfunded 
libraries."

"Whatever changes to AACR2 are merited, RDA hardly seems the answer, 
whether one considers current RDA record examples or the "ideal" RDA as 
written. Shoving what is at best a test run of new cataloging standards 
into functioning data bases is also not in anyone's interest."
